We all know that fear is a part of life. It's something that everyone experiences at one point or another, but it doesn't need to stop you from living an extraordinary life! Even though it is a human emotion, what matters most is how you fight it and how you let it affect you.
Fear has no specific meaning attached to it other than being an immediate response from our bodies to perceive danger or threats against survival. There are many different ways to experience fear. For some people, it means seeing a spider, some are afraid of going to the dentist, for others, it can be a fear of failure or rejection. The point is, there are many things that humans fear.
You can be free from the chains of fear. Imagine how much better life would be if you could conquer your fears.
Fear is what holds us back from being the best version of ourselves. At Attitude Is Free, we believe that fear should not stand in your way; it can be overcome with courage and perseverance!
So whatever it is that scares you, here are 3 ways to help you cope with your daily fears.
1. Face the Fear and Distract Yourself
Don't let your fears rule you! For example, some common "what-ifs" include failure (or even just an overreaction) as well as unrealistic worries about things happening - don't let these hold you back from living life fully! Analyzing the nature of what we fear and asking ourselves if it’s rational or based on a “what if” scenario can help overcome our anxiety.
To get a deep perspective on your fear, you should ask yourself if:
1. You are at risk
2. If the fear will kill you
3. What if the worst thing can happen?
It's always important to think about how you will handle a situation to prevent anything terrible from happening.
When your mind starts racing or the panic sets in - just sit for 2-3 minutes and start deep breathing and focus on clearing your head. It will feel challenging at first, but emotions come and go. After these minutes pass, try to do something that is nurturing for you.
Whether it is immersing yourself in a hobby you love or even calling your best friend to distract you, you will find it enjoyable! When you feel like all is lost, take a moment to breathe and remind yourself that it’s okay.
2.Use Your Brain in a Different Way than Usual
When fear arises, it overcomes your rational thought and attaches itself to the emotional center of our brain. Therefore, we must try to use a different part of thinking, such as numbers or even pictures, to combat this emotion.
When going through pain at the doctor's office, they typically ask you to rate on an "intensity scale" of 1-10. Ten being the worst possible moment imaginable - what do YOU think feels like when experiencing calm during these moments? STOP AND REFLECT.
If you rate your fear to 8, accept it, and focus your breathing while visualizing yourself lowering the scale. When you reduce the scale to 4 or a 3, then you can start smiling again and feel proud of yourself.
3. Get Support
You've been there before: you're feeling anxious and can't seem to shake the feeling. Well, it may be time to talk to someone. Family and Friends are like our bravery ladder when it comes to fears.
Sometimes, when you're feeling very anxious and cannot alleviate the anxiety yourself, talking with someone else can help take some of that pressure off.
If we can talk through our fears, then maybe that will motivate us towards looking forward instead of remaining stagnant where the emotion resides at its peak height; after all, who doesn't want more courage?
You can also seek professional help if your fears are interfering significantly with the way that you live. Usually, it takes less than ten therapy sessions to treat this, and often people experience relief from their symptoms after just one session!
Anxiety and phobias are very treatable. But, sometimes, it can be complicated to face your fears on your own. The journey to be fearless is a long one, but Attitude Is Free, we will be there with you every step of the way. Believe us; anything is possible when it comes to challenges. You are not alone!
Life can often bring us challenges, and fear is one. However, when the inner voices of this monster whisper to you - don't let them drag you down! Face it with determination; accept it, and embrace yourself to fight this battle with the right actions.
It's time to take back control and reframe your relationship with fear. When you're feeling threatened by one of your phobias, pull out any of these strategies, change how you think, and reframe your relationship with fear.
Do you feel like fears limit your potential? We invite you to take the first step of conquering them and transform them into action!
