Choose Hard

Choose Hard

As former athletes raising athletes, there is one message that continues to come up in our home, in the car rides to practice, on the sidelines, at school, and around the dinner table.

Choose hard.

It is simple, but it carries so much meaning. In a world that often encourages convenience, shortcuts, and instant gratification, we believe there is incredible value in choosing the path that requires a little more effort, a little more discipline, and a little more perseverance. Not because hard is always better, but because growth rarely happens when we stay comfortable.

At Attitude Is Free, this belief has become part of who we are. It is woven into our family, our business, and the way we approach life. As parents, we are constantly reminding our children that the choices they make today are shaping the people they will become tomorrow. The easy choice might provide immediate comfort, but the harder choice often leads to greater confidence, stronger character, and opportunities that would never have existed otherwise.

We have lived this firsthand. Athletics taught us lessons that extended far beyond the field, court, and gym. Sports taught us how to handle adversity, how to stay committed when progress felt slow, and how to keep showing up when nobody was watching. Those lessons did not disappear when our playing days ended. Today, they influence how we run our businesses, raise our children, and navigate life's challenges.

One of the greatest misconceptions is that successful people are somehow different. The truth is that most successful athletes, entrepreneurs, leaders, and parents simply become comfortable doing difficult things consistently. They understand that meaningful achievements are rarely the result of one big moment. Instead, they are built through thousands of small decisions that nobody celebrates at the time. The early morning workout. The extra hour of practice. The willingness to learn from failure instead of being defeated by it. The decision to keep moving forward when quitting would feel easier.

As parents of young athletes, we see these opportunities every day. We watch our children face challenges that test their confidence and resilience. There are disappointing performances, injuries, setbacks, and moments when things simply do not go as planned. While our instinct as parents is often to protect them from discomfort, we have learned that some of life's most valuable lessons come from working through difficult moments rather than avoiding them. Growth requires struggle. Confidence comes from overcoming obstacles. Resilience is built by facing adversity and discovering that you are capable of more than you thought.

This message is not only for athletes. It applies to every area of life. Choosing hard might mean starting the business you have been dreaming about, even when there are no guarantees. It might mean having the difficult conversation you have been avoiding. It might mean prioritizing your health, showing up for your family, or staying committed to a goal when the excitement has worn off and only discipline remains.

The reality is that life will always present us with choices. We can choose what is easy, comfortable, and familiar, or we can choose what challenges us to grow. While the easier path may offer immediate satisfaction, it is often the harder path that creates lasting fulfillment. It is the harder path that builds confidence, develops character, and prepares us for the opportunities we hope to earn.

Choose hard is more than a shirt. It is a reminder of the mindset that has shaped our lives and continues to guide our family. It is a reminder that attitude is a choice we make every day. We cannot always control the circumstances in front of us, but we can control how we respond to them. We can choose effort over excuses. We can choose growth over comfort. We can choose persistence over perfection.

Most importantly, we can choose the path that challenges us to become better.

The road will not always be easy. In fact, it usually is not. But time and time again, we have found that the harder path often leads to the bigger and brighter things we are working toward. It may take longer. It may require more sacrifice. It may test your patience and resolve. Yet those experiences shape who you become, and often that transformation is the greatest reward of all.

So whether you are an athlete chasing a dream, a parent guiding the next generation, an entrepreneur building something meaningful, or simply someone striving to become a better version of yourself, we hope this message serves as a reminder.

Choose hard.

Because the best things in life are rarely found on the easiest path.
